There’s a particular kind of elegance that doesn’t need to shout. Pete and Julia brought that with them all the way from Finland, and it showed in every detail of their three days at Hotel Santa Caterina, an off the shoulder gown with clean, sculptural lines, a white tuxedo jacket with black lapels, an entire arch built from white roses framing the view toward Amalfi below.

I photographed this wedding not long ago, and what struck me most was how unhurried the whole weekend felt. Not one big day crammed with everything, but three, each with its own mood, its own light, its own kind of memory. A relaxed rehearsal dinner by the pool at Al Mare, the ceremony itself under a tree wrapped in white roses with the coast unfolding behind them, followed by a Michelin starred dinner at Glicine, and then, the morning after, something completely different, pizza at a simple table in Amalfi town.

That contrast is what stayed with me. The same two people who exchanged rings in front of a breathtaking backdrop and dined at one of the coast’s finest tables that same night were just as at ease the next day with a slice of pizza and the sea breeze coming through an open door.

Day Two, The Wedding Day

The ceremony took place outdoors in the gardens of Hotel Santa Caterina, under a tree that had been transformed for the occasion into something almost sculptural. White roses cascaded down through the bare branches, with petals scattered across the grass below.

Golden hour was just starting to settle in, that soft, low light that the Amalfi Coast seems to specialize in, and it caught Julia’s dress perfectly as she and Pete walked the petal covered path together.

What I love about a wedding ceremony like this is watching the small, unscripted moments in between the formal ones. Julia looking down as Pete slipped the ring onto her finger, the quiet concentration on both their faces, guests just behind them holding their breath a little.

Details like that say more than any posed portrait ever could, and they are exactly the kind of moments I look for when photographing weddings in Amalfi and across Italy.

Portraits afterward moved through the hotel’s terraced gardens, olive branches overhead, glimpses of Ravello and the Amalfi Coast appearing and disappearing between the trees.

The day closed with dinner at Glicine, the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant perched on the highest terrace.

For me, photographing a wedding at Hotel Santa Caterina is not simply about documenting the spectacular views. The property gives you an incredible variety of locations and light, but the real story is always in how the couple and their guests experience the day.

Day One, The Rehearsal Dinner

The weekend opened quietly, down by the pool at Al Mare restaurant, where the light softens differently than it does higher up at the hotel.

A champagne tower stood at the center of it all, that particular kind of celebration detail that always gets everyone smiling the moment the first glass starts to pour.

It’s a night that never tries to compete with the wedding day itself, and it doesn’t need to. It’s simpler, looser, a chance for everyone traveling from Finland and beyond to finally exhale after the journey and settle into the rhythm of the Amalfi Coast.

For a destination wedding in Italy, these moments before the ceremony are often some of my favorites to photograph. There is still a sense of anticipation, but without the pressure of the wedding day itself.

Day Three, The Farewell Lunch

The morning after, the tone shifted completely. No white roses, no champagne tower, just a table at Da Maria, a simple pizzeria in the heart of Amalfi, with the whole group still a little sun drunk from the night before.

It’s my favorite kind of ending to a wedding weekend. After days of white tuxedos and champagne towers, there’s something genuinely moving about watching everyone unwind over a pizza and a cold drink, still glowing from everything that came before.

And from a photography point of view, these quieter moments are just as important as the ceremony, the portraits and the reception. They tell the story of the whole destination wedding, not just the few hours when everyone is dressed up and standing in front of a camera.

There was also time for a few family group photos during the wedding day, keeping things simple and relaxed rather than turning them into a long formal session. Parents, siblings and close friends gathered together for a handful of photographs, with the Amalfi coastline in the background. These are an important part of wedding photography at Hotel Santa Caterina, especially for couples bringing their families to Amalfi from abroad.
